A skin biopsy is a medical procedure during which a small sample of skin or tissue from a lesion is taken for laboratory examination. It helps to accurately determine a diagnosis, distinguish between benign and malignant growths, and select the most appropriate treatment strategy.

No special preparation is required before the procedure; however, it is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing that does not cover the area to be examined.

A biopsy is performed only upon a doctor’s recommendation, if it is necessary to confirm a diagnosis or investigate a suspicious skin lesion. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the biopsy, either when additional tissue is needed or if the initial sample was not informative.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so pain is minimal or not felt at all.
A biopsy usually takes 15–30 minutes, depending on the location and size of the lesion.
Histology results are usually available within 1–2 weeks.
Depending on the size of the sample taken, a small scar may remain, but your doctor will give you advice on how to minimize it.
If a growth changes shape, color, or size, or causes discomfort, your doctor may recommend a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis.
